Create Mixed-Media Valentine’s Cards With Watercolor and Crayons Ages 9-12

In this special February class, students will learn four basic watercolor techniques to create Valentine’s cards.

Card one:
Students will draw or trace several hearts.
Students will color the heart/s with crayons.
Students will watercolor the background.
This technique shows students that watercolor will roll off wax crayons.

Card two:
Students will draw or trace two hearts on watercolor paper and cut out.
Students will trace the hearts they cut out of watercolor paper.
Students will color the hearts in with white crayon.
Students will watercolor background and then glue cut out hearts.

Card three:
Students will learn how salt creates a cool effect on watercolor.

Card four:
Students will learn the wet on wet watercolor technique.

Card five:
Time permitting
Students will create another card with any of the techniques they learned.

This class will be fun and students are encouraged to talk about and ask questions about the activities.

Note: This is not a watercolor class. Simple techniques will be taught for the purpose of exposing students to different mediums and mixed-media art.

  1. painting over wax crayon to keep paper white
  2.  salt absorbs water creating texture
  3. basic blending on paper
  4. wet on wet
